The Summer Of Everything Book Review

 Hello readers,

I finished a book a week or 2 back and wrote an in-depth review on it so please continue reading.

The Summer of Everything is about Wesley Hudson whose summer has gone terribly wrong and he has to face adulthood. I picked this book up as a part of a side quest in the Pondathon. I was a little bit disappointed with the end of the book but it was cute. I don't really get the hype around this book though. I do agree that it was a cute read. I think I set my expectations too high for this book and it isn’t the type of topic that I have too much interest in. Once, I finished the book I felt really good and it was a good way to end the day. This book would come under the genres of community, friendship, romance and young adult.

I think what makes this book unique is its aspects of drawing attention to different types of music, comic books, a bookstore and the beauty of Santa Monica. I love Once Upon a Page after this read!

I didn’t like this book that much because of the plot twists. The previous books I read privileged me with amazing twists but this just lacked a surprise factor. I understand that huge plot twists aren’t really the purpose of the story though.

I liked the simple writing. It didn’t need me to rack my head on different words. I loved how this writing can literally make you imagine a lot of the things shown and described. The pace of the writing was pretty slow till the end when everything started falling into place. I think this was kind of annoying because how it wasn’t continuing at the same pace throughout the book and it would be more suitable for the genre if it was maintaining a pace.

The plot is essentially about a geek, i.e, Wesley Hudson and he is spending his summer before going to UCLA doing the things he loves. He has made a list of things he wants to do but this list was collapsing because of all the events happening around him. 1. His second home - Once upon a page - was being threatened by a coffee house franchise and he needs to figure out how to save it with the help of his friends. 2. He wants to confess to his best friend/crush Nico Alvarez but all the advice from BuzzFeed articles and his friends aren’t really helping. 3. His annoying brother, Leo wants help with his wedding planning. With all these problems there’s only one thing Wes can do. Face Adulthood.

The story was definitely different from what I usually read but it’s a feel-good read.

Now let’s talk about the characters-

Protagonist: Wesley Hudson: He’s a comic book geek and loves DC and Green Lantern especially. His mom is a big-time author, Savannah Kirk and his dad is a popular chef, Calvin Hudson. Wes likes books and 90’s alt-rock music. He is an LGBTQ character. Wes is going to UCLA after summer.

Nico Alvarez: He is a Mexican-American and an LGBTQ character as well. Nico likes skateboarding, orange soda and comic books too. He has three younger sisters. His dad died and to help people he wants to pursue becoming a doctor at Stanford. He likes saving random quotes on his Pinterest board too.

Ella Graham: Wesley’s best friend. She is an emo punk goth. She has issues with her parents and is very strongly opinionated. She too is going to UCLA majoring in communications.

Some other important characters include Kyra, Anna, Manu, Cooper, Zay, Lucas, Mrs Rossi, Leeann and Leo.

My favourite character was Anna because of her positive attitude. Though she was only a side character she left a good impression on me.

In conclusion, I think this book was okay for its relevant themes. I appreciate the rep in this and the characters as well. The writer has made a good effort into this book.

If you enjoy some light and fluffy reads this is the book for you. But please don’t make the same thing I did and set your expectations high. Also, don’t restrict yourself from reading it because of this review because everyone’s tastes are different.
